Breaking the Wall of Healing the Earth: FWLab UAlberta 2017

Thu Oct 19, 2017
Land reclamation returns damaged or changed land back to its natural, or almost natural, state. Today, land reclamation is becoming increasingly important, as the world seeks to reclaim land damaged by resource extraction, farming and other human activities, and by natural disasters. A crucial major land reclamation challenge is finding ‘suitable soil.’ Suitable soil is essential for successful plant growth and is the foundation for ecosystem development. PhD student Valerie Miller builds new soil. She is developing ways to build soils using various waste material—using waste to clean up wasteland. Her processes can be adapted and scaled for various land reclamation situations and help health the earth for current and future generations.
